Installer and Installation details: 

• Installer, Installation, and Generator information 

• Details of Proposed Additional Generating Unit(s) (including electricity storage), such as, 

• Intrinsic Design Capacity; the design capacity of the unit 

• Registered Capacity; the export limitation of the unit set by the manufacturer 

• EREC G100 export limitation set by the installer 

• Target installation dates 

• MPAN and details of existing installations, where applicable 

• Electrical measurements using form FO-NET-CAB-008 (For SGI-3 applications only; guidance available in PR-NET-CAB-004) 

Supporting information might we need: 

Schematic diagrams showing: 

• The generator(s) itself 

• Name and power rating (kW) of the inverter being used 

• Live phases, neutral, earth 

• Lockable isolators 

• Clear demarcation between our and your equipment 

• G100 Export Limitation Scheme 

G98 Approved Inverter Type Test Certificate(s) and G100 declaration: 

• The power rating (kW) on the certificate should match the power rating (kW) of the inverter shown on the schematic diagram.

When you don’t need an Export Limitation Scheme: 

• If you have no generation connected to your property. 
  
  
• If your total generation capacity is 3.68kW or less (most domestic solar PV systems meet this, but check with your provider). 
  
  
• If you plan to install generation and don’t want to export power to the grid, as long as your total generation capacity is below your minimum energy demand. 
  
  
• If you plan to export power to the grid and we confirm there is enough spare capacity in the network to accommodate it. 

When you might need Export Limitation Scheme: 

• If you want to install generation, export power, and we tell you there isn’t enough spare network capacity. In this case: 
  
  
• An Export Limitation Scheme could be cheaper than paying for network upgrades. 
  
  
• It could also mean a faster connection to the grid. 

Why Export Limitation Matters: 
Exporting too much power can overload the network or cause unsafe voltage levels, potentially damaging equipment. An Export Limitation Scheme prevents these issues by ensuring exported power stays within safe limits.

When you apply to us to connect your new generation, if you are planning to install an Export Limitation Scheme then you should include details of the scheme with your application. Alternatively, if our design team determines that you will need an Export Limitation Scheme then they will include this requirement in our connection offer to you. 

The total capacity of generation you can connect is subject to requirements in our code of practice, depending on your connection type and location. For domestic customers, this typically ranges between 5kW and 15kW. The maximum generation is the lesser of: 

1. 125% of your import/export agreement (whichever is greater), or
   
   
2. The amount of exported power that would cause voltage at any customer's supply point to exceed the statutory limit by 1% 

If the distributed generation being installed is under 30 kilowatts your supplier will arrange your export MPAN. 

If distributed generation between 30 kilowatts and 50 kilowatts the network planner will be able to provide your export MPAN. 

If distributed generation above 50 kilowatts your Account Manager will provide this.

If your installation is rated at less than 3.68 kilowatts, your installer should notify us after the install, by completing an Installation Commissioning Confirmation Form on your behalf. They can notify us by email:

If you are planning to install a generator rated above 3.68 kilowatts, or multiple generators, at multiple premises, we will need the full technical details of the generation equipment proposed and its location. The connection process varies according to the size of the generation equipment. For guidance, please use our Generation Connection Guide.

We need to be notified about each generating unit you install and commission. Your installer must provide us with an Installation Commissioning Confirmation within 28 days of each generating unit being commissioned. They can notify us by email:

We class your generation scheme as Distributed Generation if it operates while electrically connected to our distribution network. The term “Embedded Generation” is sometimes used. You can use the electricity you generate from your Distributed G scheme to reduce your consumption from the network. Alternatively, you can export some or all of it to our network.

Once you’ve planned your project and shared the details with us, your installer should submit the application form on your behalf. The application must include the technical details of your generating unit so we can review its impact on our network. Based on this assessment, we’ll provide the conditions for your connection. Afterward, your unit can be installed and commissioned according to G99 and any specific requirements.

For installations under G99 or G98, we recommend your installer completes the appropriate notification form on your behalf.

If you are looking to get paid for exporting to the grid, check with your electricity supplier if they offer an export tariff, this was previously known as a Feed-in Tariff. It was a government incentive to encourage small scale low carbon electricity generation under 5MW. This is no longer available, but some suppliers now offer their own export tariffs. 

Most suppliers will require a ‘DNO Response’ in order to apply for an export tariff, this is the email which is sent from us to confirm that we have logged your commissioning documents on our system and confirm the system is compliant with G98/G99. Once you have received this email you will be able to apply for an export tariff.

G98 and G99 are technical standards for the protection settings required for generators or storage assets to connect to electricity networks. These settings act as a safety mechanism to protect both the network and the equipment from faults. 

Since April 27, 2019, all generating equipment connected to any electricity distribution network, whether managed by a Distribution Network Operator (DNO) like SSEN or an Independent Distribution Network Operator (IDNO)—must comply with these standards outlined in the Energy Networks Association (ENA) engineering recommendation documents.
